The more I see about the issues with SpaceX and the FAA, beginning to seriously think that Musk & Co are seriously being targeted for regulatory swarm, with several plausible guesses as to 'why'.
So far, the FAA is hiding behind a generic 'muh, because safteyism' dismissal as to their reason, but at the same time, the crowd that signed off on the 737-Max are also squeaking about 'problems with the license application - in other words 'paperwork' aka kissing the rear ends of petty self important aparatchiks. There's also the sudden appearance of 'news' that supposedly a piece of SN8 was hurled over 2 miles into Mexico - something that sounds like it would have been blared all over well before being announced AFTER the dust up came to light with the cancellations, twice, at the last minute, of SN9. They've also trotted out that they 'opened an investigation' into the 'crash' of SN8, when the cause has been pretty well determined.
Something about this really stinks on ice.
Note also, the announcement that the DoJ is 'investigating' SpaceX for discriminatory hiring practices based upon a single complaint - filed by a non-US Citizen against the Company because they didn't hire them. Despite standing US Government restrictions against SpaceX doing so (hiring non-US Citizens), as the work SpaceX is performing is defined as "weapons tech". Especially take note of that, folks that thought calling SpaceX products 'ICBMs' was was dumb.
It would certainly be sheer conspiracy theory to posit that some drones at FAA are running interference for a an underperforming ULA, most recently embarrassed by Boeing software with their money pit boondoggle public jobs program also known as SLS. Conspiracy theory probably, but as the Church Lady says "isn't that conveeeeeeeenient". The ragged edge of conspiracy theorizing would place the increased tension with Beijing, and there vigorous space activities, along with their insinuation into US institutions, front and center of the list, as well.
The calculation at this point may be that they are game on to screw with SpaceX, and Musk, figuring he's got too much invested in his variety of enterprises in the US, or that by calling his rocket work "weapons tech" they have him tied down like Gulliver, enough so to stop him from un-arsing to a much more cooperative environment, such as say, Brazil. Who, by the by, Elon has been already talking with, in discussions about a Southern Hemisphere launch site.
This has all the hallmarks that it will can get really ugly and stupid, and will not turn out well for the US, which seems to fit in with a lot of apparent plans that seem to be unfolding before our eyes.
