The question raised here is to whom should our mercy be extended? The guy with the cup on the street? The person who has a franchise spot on the sidewalk with the magic marker cardboard sign saying "Homeless"? The woman who accosts people on the street every night after church as they are coming out? The person who has lived rent free for 5 years in the homeless shelter warm and well fed while living like a demon in open rebellion against God otherwise? People who use the mercy of good people who can afford to run from God because they are enabled by soup kitchens, clothing give aways, and food pantrys? Are we doing people good by sanctioning their skill in gaming the system, government and christian to keep from becoming what they were meant to be? IS THAT What the verse really says??
James 2:14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
