How do we comprehend evil like this? My Church has some observations. Man is fallen and so is capable of anything; in fact he has a genius for doing harm. We might choose to live in despair at this state of affairs, but we are offered some hope. Blogger Thomas Peters reminds us of Pope Benedict’s words when he visited the death camps of Poland: “In the face of the horror of Auschwitz there is no other response than the Cross of Christ: Love descended to the very depths of the abyss of evil to save man in his core.” To the believer, there is hope that the crucified Christ offers redemption from evil. For the nonbeliever, there’s hope to be drawn from the example of one human being who is willing to suffer alongside another. The flip side of all our potential for evil is our potential for good – and rest assured that we shall see a lot of good in the next few weeks. America will rally and mourn together; the better side of humanity will show itself. The world will respond to this tragedy with compassion, and that’s what must give us hope.
