This morning was 8 degrees. That is cold in IL. Probably shirtsleeve weather in ND. But, I'm in IL.
I was out tinking around in the greenhouse which is attached to my house. The temp in there is about 65 degrees. Cold enough to keep the plants thinking over blooming or not, warm enough to help them prosper.
How much like a church should be like a greenhouse.
It's a place of protection and refuge from the world.
It's a place where nurture and growth in safety can take place.
It's a place where no pests or predators are allowed.
There's always a gardner to make sure things are proper.
The water is always given in enough quantity and purity to allow for growth.
The nutrients needed to allow maximum growth are applied carefully, not one size fits all.
The temperature is exactly right for growth.
The sun can shine in and give warmth.
You are nurtured along with other plants.
I'm sure the list goes on, but the parallel struck me.

I Was Wrong!
I have come to my senses. I have been wrong all along. It’s hard for me to say this but the war in Iraq and my support for Israel has been misguided.
I have seen the light. A wiser man than I am has shown me the way.
Here are the facts that changed my way of thinking:
The real aggressor toward the Palestinians is Israel.
Israelis are making life more and more difficult for the rightful owners of the land of Palestine. In broad day-light, in front of cameras and before the eyes of the world, they are bombarding innocent defenseless civilians, bulldozing houses, firing machine guns at students in the streets and alleys, and subjecting their families to endless grief.
The war in Iraq is another thing I was wrong on.
Consider these truths: Since the commencement of the US military presence in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed, maimed or displaced. Terrorism in Iraq has grown exponentially. With the presence of the US military in Iraq, nothing has been done to rebuild the ruins, to restore the infrastructure or to alleviate poverty. The US Government used the pretext of the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but later it became clear that that was just a lie and a deception.
What it has done to our country:
One hundred and fifty thousand American soldiers, separated from their families and loved ones, are operating under the command of the current US administration. A substantial number of them have been killed or wounded and their presence in Iraq has tarnished the image of the American people and government.
Even a beat of my heart goes out to Cindy Shehan:
Their mothers and relatives have, on numerous occasions, displayed their discontent with the presence of their sons and daughters in a land thousands of miles away from US shores. American soldiers often wonder why they have been sent to Iraq.
And the cost of war:
I no longer consent to the billions of dollars of annual expenditure from the treasury for this military misadventure.
Then there are the atrocities which continue to be uncovered being commited by our troops:
The US administration is kidnapping its presumed opponents from across the globe and arbitrarily holding them without trial or any international supervision in horrendous prisons that it has established in various parts of the world. God knows who these detainees actually are, and what terrible fate awaits them.
The worst are the Guantanamo and Abu-Ghraib prisons. The US administration attempts to justify them through its proclaimed "war on terror." But every one knows that such behavior, in fact, offends global public opinion, exacerbates resentment and thereby spreads terrorism, and tarnishes the US image and its credibility among nations.
Then there are the losses of civil liberties:
Under the pretext of "the war on terror," civil liberties in the United States are being increasingly curtailed. Even the privacy of individuals is fast losing its meaning. Judicial due process and fundamental rights are trampled upon. Private phones are tapped, suspects are arbitrarily arrested, sometimes beaten in the streets, or even shot to death.
It would be so much better if we spent the money we spend on the war on things at home:
Now that Iraq has a Constitution and an independent Assembly and Government, would it not be more beneficial to bring the US officers and soldiers home, and to spend the astronomical US military expenditures in Iraq for the welfare and prosperity of the American people? As we know very well, many victims of Katrina continue to suffer, and countless Americans continue to live in poverty and homelessness.
My hope is that the new leadership in congress will get a handle on this:
If the new US Government meets the current domestic and external challenges with an approach based on truth and Justice, it can remedy some of the past afflictions and alleviate some of the global resentment and hatred of America. But if the approach remains the same, it would not be unexpected that the American people would similarly reject the new electoral winners, although the recent elections, rather than reflecting a victory, in reality point to the failure of the current administration's policies.
And to be certain that these revelations come to you as well, these did not come from John Murtha, the New York Times, or Daily Kos. I didn’t trust them. You’ve heard all this from them. It took a Man of God to show me the error of my ways. You can read his letter to me that turned it all around.

Campus activists plan to display an "ACLU Nativity Scene" at the University of Texas in response to the civil liberties group's "extreme" campaign to remove Christmas from the public sphere.
"We've got Gary and Joseph instead of Mary and Joseph in order to symbolize ACLU support for homosexual marriage, and of course there isn't a Jesus in the manger," said Tony McDonald, chairman of the Young Conservatives of Texas branch on the Austin campus.
McDonald told WND his group has been working on the "crèche" at his apartment and plans to install it on the West Mall of the campus for display Monday and Tuesday.
The three Wise Men in the display are Lenin, Marx and Stalin, McDonald said, because ACLU founder Roger Baldwin was a backer of Soviet-style communism.
As director of the ACLU in 1934, Baldwin wrote an article entitled "Freedom in the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R." in which he said "the Soviet Union has already created liberties far greater than exist elsewhere in the world."
"The whole scene is a tongue-in-cheek way of showing the many ways that the ACLU and the far left are out of touch with the values of mainstream America," McDonald said in a statement.
The scene will also have a "terrorist shepherd" and an angel with Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi's face, using a photograph of the soon-to-be speaker of the House from San Francisco
"The ACLU and other left-wing extremist groups are working diligently to destroy Americans' rights to the free expression of religion," said the Young Conservatives' Executive Director Joseph Wyly.
Wyly pointed to the city of Chicago's decision this week to ban advertisements for "The Nativity Story" movie from a local Christmas festival, fearing they might offend non-Christians.
"It's just more evidence that there is a war on Christmas being waged by the far-left in this country," he said.

CyberChurch
DATELINE: Christmas 2020 AD
First Bapticostal Church opens it’s Premium Service, the Sunday Before Christmas in Geneva IL.

Pastor Jimmy O’Donnell (who is actually located in Virginia Beach Va) preaches a sermon delivered holographically to the sanctuary. He is entertaining, clever, moving and the best high quality preaching you could ever hope to find.
First of Geneva is one of 177 holographic pulpits to see and hear Brother Jimmy “live”. Oh there had been some complaining when the Holographic Service was initiated, but PR Jimmy was so good and people said, “We need to have first class preaching when we have church”. So now First and 176 other churches have first class preaching.
What was even more amazing everyone heard the message in their own tounge. By a unique targeting method and recognition the image generator also generated the voice in a language you would understand. This eliminated the need for translators and made spreading the Gospel around the world much better without the need for human intervention.
One of the essentials in becoming part of First was having a chip implanted under your scalp. That’s how much of the ministry took place. The equipment knew who you were by the chip.
The giving system long ago moved to automated giving. Behind every seat in the sanctuary was a smart chip sweep reader and a keypad. When Br Jimmy took the offering people made a sweep by the chip reader. Some signed up to have a tithe directly drawn from their Amero Dollar accounts. Since the unification of North America the Amero Dollar was the universal currency.
It was communion Sunday. People filed past the Communimatic Machine. It was able to use the chip reader and in a clear and reassuring voice give individual communion to every person by name. This was much better than pastor Don who was the last human pastor of the church. By walking up to the beautiful spiritual-looking altar encasing the comminimatic, a wafer and a small cup of wine or grape juice was dispensed. It knew by a prior questionnaire which you preferred. The beauty of the communimatic was the fact that it never forgot a name. It always knew who you were.
And the music. Wow! Who could complain about it. In the same holographic presentation that PR Jimmy came to them, a complete worship team from the best churches in the world were displayed in holographic realism. Hillsong, Maranatha, Lakeland, Morningstar. When worship music was played it was the highest and best worship possible. Did God deserve any less? People from the congregation were invited to join the holographic worship team although they weren’t allowed to have their instruments or voices actually heard. But, those who did saw it as a privilege to be able to play along with such a good band, even if it was 10,000 miles away and 6 weeks ago. No one would ever have know the difference except for the one time when there was a lightning strike on a power transformer and the worship band melted away in front of the congregation.
Baptisms were automated. The immersion tanks had a leaning bar, the theological argument postualated was there was nothing scriptural about having human hands actually do the baptizing. In fact they were right. So the candidate after viewing an online preparation stepped into the tank and leaned back on the leaning bar. Baptism were thusly initiated, the person let down and lifted up with the words according to the creed selected, Jesus name only, or Jesus Name and Father Son and Holy Ghost or just Father Son and Holy Ghost. People accepted this and it was convenient. There became 24 hour baptistrys. A reasonable contribution allowed families at 3AM to bring a candidate to be Baptized. For Churches that sprinkled, the Rain Bird corporation had produced a wonderful machine that was sanitary and sprinkled at just the place a laser pointer would point to. You just held the baby and water and words were delivered.
People seeking a prophetic word from God were served by an Automatic Prophetic Word Generator. The theology that justified this was that God could cause the computer to give just the right word for that person at that time. People would come, make a small offering with the wave chip and presto a word like, “Lo the Lord is with you at all times, and the answer to your question is YES. Be bold be brave for the Lord our God is with you.” Sometimes this caused confusion when the word seemed to give approval and encouragement to a questioner contemplating divorce or suicide.
If a person needed healing there was the Healing Cloth Dispenser. Using the verse in Acts where Paul blessed cloths and they were laid on people for healing, the person in need of healing came forward, rehearsed into the HCD what the problem was. A dollop of anointing oil was delivered by a tube directly to the forehead in the sign of the cross while words of faith and deliverance for healing were played from the machine. People loved this. They took the cloths home and revered them. Testimonies were given about this wonderful administer of God’s grace. Little did they know that the machine and the cloths were made in China and the Oil came from a factory in Iran. The only blessing that ever happened was a priest from the old school visited the docks where shipping containers were being unloaded containing the cloths and machines were being unloaded. He would say a few words over them, make the sign of the cross and go home to watch reruns of Seinfeld.
If you wanted prayer, did they have a program for you. There was a realistic representation of a section of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. You could approach it and stand there alone or if you asked a loving man or woman image would appear holograhically. They would agree with you in prayer saying "Amen, Yes Lord and Help him/her Lord" as you poured out your heart. Those prayers were automatically transmitted via broadband to a receiver in Jerusalem that transmitted those words of prayer directly into the wailing wall. You could be sure God could hear you better if you prayed so that the God of the wall could hear. Voice recognition remembered your prayers and stored them. Pr Jimmy's Holograph could give assurance of God’s blessings as you left the service.
The beautiful part of this whole thing is Church never closed. It was open 24-7. Many of the other participants in the service were holographs from other churches piped in so that it looked like every service was full. The singing was exuberant. The amens from the congregation were lively. Every service was multicultural. It was such fun. Not real, but fun.
And when the service was over, a holographic image of Pastor Jimmy stood by the door and greeted you and your wife. He would aske about the kids, how your back problem was coming along, your job, how bout them Cubbies and was warm and caring. He missed absolutely no one. And never forgot a name. Never caught a cold, never was absent, never went on vacation and never was tired. The perfect Pastor. Of course all responses to Holograpic PR Jimmy were processed by voice recognition and stored for your next meeting. Pr Jimmy knew all, saw all. Better than Jesus some thought.
Of course all teaching, all Sunday school and all children’s activities were equally cyber-delivered. Keeping track of your kids was never a problem since the Nannybots had subdermal chip readers to know at all times where your kids were. And singing those troublesome Sunday School songs like Jesus Loves Me? No problem, the kids became part of a marvelous little cyber holograph kids singing group and even if they sang off key looked like they were brilliant at all times. No one attending any of the Sunday School Programs ever knew what or who was real or what was Memorex. The parents thought their little darlings were so brilliant.
You didn’t have to wonder what was going on at First. Long since any bulletins or announcements were obsolete, just log on to WWW.CYBERFIRSTGENEVA.ORG and you would learn everything you wanted to know. Or have announcements, prayer requests, and pleas for money send directly to your PDA.
If you had a virtual reality headset you didn’t actually have to leave home to attend First Bapticostal. You could enjoy the whole thing from your easy chair and no one knew that while in Church you also were enjoying a scotch and water and a nice cigar while singing along with the Holographic worship team from Austrailia. Besides, when you logged in a well groomed representation of you showed up in the congregation holographically. People thought you were actually there.
Funerals were given completly over to funeral providers. They did it so well and professionally as they published electronic reviews of a persons life, pictures, videos, imported a few canned holograpic singers of sad songs and family spoke. Many attendees of the funerals accessed and viewed them online with online condolences. Graves were considered messy. So all funerals became mandated to end in cremation. Funerals didn't fit into CyberChurch. It wasn't much of a loss. Funerals could be messy and unprofessional. I mean we can comfort one another can't we? Who needs a Church to do that?
Marriage was outlawed by President Lily M. Johnson D (IL). Weddings were considered discriminatory against homosexuals after the big battles over same sex marriage waged by Christians. So to avoid any sign of religious intervention in "Family" development all weddings were eliminated by an act of congress and the ACLU. There were a few underground weddings but not many. People would just move in together. The New North American Bible written in Spanglish the national language of North America was cleansed of all references to husbands and wives. "Others" was the replacement word for any references previously made about husbands and wives. So much neater and cleaner. Besides, marriages had become messy in the church what with the bitter divorce of the pope and his wife.
Oh there were subversive groups who insisted on doing things without all the electronic cyber froo froo. They were looked upon as old fashioned. Luddite in mentality. They dropped out of cyberchurch and formed little groups in homes. They were questioned and indicted at being anti social; even unchristian. There were laws past. House church became illegal. The government controlled what went on in CyberChurch. They took a piece of the "take" to protect them from Muslims and other alternative religions (like house church).
Sadly there weren’t many Pastors left to visit them. The offices and occupations of Pastor, Minister, Prophet, Teacher, Evangelist, Apostle, Sunday School Teachers and Worship leaders was all but eliminated by the CyberChurch revolution. George Barna III railed against these developments but was laughed off the platform by those insisting "that Jesus deserved the best" even if it did look like a Macys Store with fake decorations, fake muzak, fake friendliness.
Church had become perfect; high quality, clean, always starting and ending on time, professional, sterile, souless, empty and powerless. In other words having a form but nothing else. But, "Did Jesus deserve anything less than professional excellence?" proponents of CyberChurch asked. Opponents of CyberChurch said Jesus didn't die for computers. The computers laughed.
Personal Note:
I know those who know me well know I have grave misgivings about the direction the Church in America is taking. Me Church it’s called by some. Always in the name of doing things even more excellent for Jesus. In the end when you carry something to it’s logical extension you will see that where we are headed with the whole cyber-church phenomena that is invading the church is an abomination I want no part of.
What’s really sad is we aren’t far from much of this right now in the church. Worse, some of these “Ideas” are some that a person with fewer scruples will say, “Hey, that’s a good idea, lets do it”. Sadly many of these ideas are already common and accepted in the Church. We are in such deep doo doo.
Everything I talked about is linked to something that is already in place or contemplated. This is not theory. How far down this slippery slope are you willing to go?
Now that I’ve let the cat out of the bag I’ll probably see the Communimatic advertised in the next issue of Charisma.

I Find Romeo
Last Night Peggy and I went to see Romeo and Juliet (the Opera) by Gounod. We saw the Massenet iteration of this a few years ago and I was less than excited by it. Massenet can be good, I loved Thais.
Well, I was wowed. I don't mean impressed. Wowed. The singers were fabulous in every way. And the music, who can understand how anyone can write such beauty.
I will admit, I'm familiar with Faust and the Gounod Ave Maria. Both kept popping up. I guess like any composer who he is shows up over and over again. I once spoke with a prominent composer and asked him why his compositions all seemed to have a very similar sound. Didn't he ever just write something completely different.
He said music is like making love with the same woman, although each time is different there is a familiarly that makes it accessible and adds to the enjoyment.
This opera is also one of the great "date" operas of all time. La Boheme was made famous as a "Date" opera by "Moonstruck" the movie. I am here to say, I think this opera has it beat.
I wonder why I don't see it performed more? This was my first encounter.
Oh, and not to shock you, even Christians and Opera lovers think about love and sex. Just thought I'd let you know.

The Kingdom of Self - Most Churches
Next Saturday I am teaching on the true Spirit of Christmas. It should be the true Spirit in the Church. It should be a Spirit and Truth experience every time we darken the Church House Doors. It doesn't attract much because most of the Church in America is pretty putrid to God. And we are putrid to others.
I don't say this because I hate the Church. In fact I love it too much not to call it what it is. Lost and sinful. God will have a Church without spot or wrinkle at the end. It won't look much like the Church of today. I lifted this from a source I am using next Saturday. I'll not give attribution right yet.
Nations around have no reason to be attracted to the God of Israel because they see the constant hypocrisy of His people.
God's charge is that the people are busy pursuing their own pleasures and pursuing their own business as first priority. It was each man for himself. "It is OK for me to be a believer as long as God doesn't interfere with my plans and the way I want to live my life." "God helps those who help themselves, I'm only looking out for Number One."
This attitude in the Church produces FALSE WORSHIP
"...a religion which assumes a relationship with God while discounting a relationships with the people."
J Vernon McGee calls this "playing church."
"Religion that it pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit widows and orphans in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world." (James)
Ray Stedman says "the ultimate test of faith has always been: does it lead you to serve, to help somebody in need? Do you feel motivated to act? If you do, your faith is real. Otherwise, as James says, it is a "dead faith." The acid test is not, "What does my religion do for me?" but, "What does it make me do for others?"
A selfish life brings inevitable clashes with friends and family alike. We can not do things our way without violating the rights and boundaries of others. In the New Testament, James says that wars and violence are a direct consequence of a life lived hedonistically for one's own pleasures and goals. A self-centered life takes advantage of others--pressing onward and upward oblivious to the needs of others around us who are less fortunate than ourselves. But, a self-centered life brings frustration--it runs contrary to the way things were created. When we reach our goals we find them hollow and empty. The resulting frustration leaves us angry, resentful, and even murderous in our hearts. "I want 'my rights,'" "I deserve a good life, I earned it."

False Worship
* Religion that is impersonal, formal turned-inward, purely liturgical, program centered.
* Comes into place by habit and tradition. "This is the way we have always done things here." Seems logical, reasonable.
* Self-serving (what can God do for us?)
* Isolationist, Escapist (God will save us out of this awful evil world). Country-club Christianity
* Predictable, comfortable, controlled, orchestrated, no surprises, runs on autopilot
* Passive involvement by most of the members, (ignoring the reality that God is a deeply personal Being)

Ray Stedman says "the ultimate test of faith has always been: does it lead you to serve, to help somebody in need? Do you feel motivated to act? If you do, your faith is real. Otherwise, as James says, it is a "dead faith." The acid test is not, "What does my religion do for me?" but, "What does it make me do for others?"
A selfish life brings inevitable clashes with friends and family alike. We can not do things our way without violating the rights and boundaries of others. In the New Testament, James says that wars and violence are a direct consequence of a life lived hedonistically for one's own pleasures and goals. A self-centered life takes advantage of others--pressing onward and upward oblivious to the needs of others around us who are less fortunate than ourselves. But, a self-centered life brings frustration--it runs contrary to the way things were created. When we reach our goals we find them hollow and empty. The resulting frustration leaves us angry, resentful, and even murderous in our hearts. "I want 'my rights,'" "I deserve a good life, I earned it."
Liars Lie (again) and the MSM Spread the Lies
Yesterday a friend of mine called and was quite distraught with the situation deteriorating in Iraq. I listened to him and was quiet.
It had to do with a news story that Reuters had published that said 6 men were dragged from their mosque and burned alive. That the police stood by and did nothing. You have probably heard the story. As soon as Reuters went with it the AP picked it up and it has now been published round the world. Reaction has been predictable. Horrors.
Now, it seem that all this was a hoax. A reputed liar, Police Captain Jamil Hussein told this tall tale. He did so because it gets him publicity. So, now, we have people all over the world upset, frustrated and retaliation going on for something that didn't happen.
All over a lie.
Reuters should have vetted the story. They didn't. They just went with it without any check. The AP were sheep. That's our mainstream media for you. They report any lie as long as it made the war look futile and Bush look bad.

Caring for the Poor part 3 - Real Help vs Doing Bad by Doing good
After Katrina there was a great deal of money spent and lost because we, the church and the government don't understand Biblical assistance. Much of what is done in the name of mercy is enabling people to not get their life together or make a serious effort. If you want an example, look at what we have done to the poor American Indian with the reservation and entitlement system. In a different way we have done the same with the black man. We must stop doing bad by doing good.
I saw a story today about a church in Tennesee who GAVE an $80,000 house free and clear to a couple who were victums of Katrina. Instead of gratitude and moving into the house, the couple sold it and pocketed the money saying, "Take it up with God". I know they were dolts. I know they were leaches. But they are a bad/good example of Christians trying to do good and ending up doing bad. By their actions that Church sanctioned the greed and lack of morals of that couple. That church had other options. I'll be they take it next time. So, if the following seems just a little hard hearted, it's harder hearted to just be enablers and give without expecting some effort on the part of the reciever.

Christians will actually help the poor using three main methods.
Daily Food Distribution
During times of crisis and in poor countries, Deacons will organise a daily distribution of food to those who are poor. For example, the apostles organised a “daily distribution of food” in Jerusalem (Acts 6:2).
Regular distributions of food may not be necessary during more normal times. The focus will shift to caring for widows and others who have fallen into hardships. Some pragmatic principles for this work are outlined in Paul’s letter to Timothy. The aim was to focus on those with real needs.
Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need (1 Tim 5:3).
Help is only provided to those with genuine needs.
1. Poor people who are unwilling to work would not receive help (2 Thes 5:10).
2. People with families should seek help from their families first. They should only go to the church if their family are unable to help (1 Tim 5:4).
3. Poor people receiving help must help the church by devoting themselves to prayer (1 Tim 5:5).
4. People who live for pleasure should not be helped. (1 Tim 5:6).
5. Young widows should remarry rather than remain dependent on the church for a long time (1 Tim 5:11-15). Some of these widows might have been the wives of martyrs.
Five principles will shape the efforts of the church to care of the poor.
1. Efforts should focus on those in serious need.
2. Care should normally be short term. People were encouraged to take steps that would enable them to support themselves.
3. Most attention will be given to older widows who are unable to care for themselves.
4. The church should always be the last resort for those seeking help.
5. Caring must take place within strong relationships. All assistance to the poor should function at the local level where the people are known.

The second main method for assisting the poor is an interest-free loan. When a person strikes temporary hardship, they will often need help to get started again. They may need to pay for training or need capital to start a business. The solution is a loan of some money. God’s people are commanded to be generous to those in need.
1. No interest should be charged on a loan to the person who is poor.
2. The loan should have a seven-year term (Deut 15:9). We do not know the future, so we should not commit ourselves for longer than ten years.
3. If the loan has not been repaid at the end of seven years, it should be cancelled (Deut 15:1). This removes part of the burden from the recipient. They have an incentive to succeed, but if they fail the burden will be lifted. This principle also means that the person making the loan must be prepared to lose the entire amount. They face additional uncertainty. They might just lose the interest, but there is a possibility that they will lose the lot. They should be prepared for that eventuality.
4. Often the loan should be provided by a family member (Lev 25:25). If no one in the family can help, someone in the church might provide the loan.
5. If the poor person has no family to help and their character is not known to the church, they might be asked to give something of value as a pledge. If the pledge is something that they need during the day, it should be returned in the morning.
6. We must always show kindness and respect to the person in need. The fact that she is poor does not give us the right to charge into her house or tell her what to do.
Loans give an incentive for the person to get back onto their feet. Most people do not want to be in debt. They will usually work hard to pay back the loan.
The worst effect of government social welfare is the effect that it has on the incentive to work and succeed. People no longer have to work to supply their needs, because the government will provide for them. Those who do work are taxed heavily, to pay the cost of social welfare. They soon get the feeling that it does not pay to work hard and the whole economy is weakened. Interest free loans strengthen the economy.
Poor loans are an excellent method for helping people in third world countries. The greatest problem is lack of capital. Local lenders often charge exorbitant interest rates that enslave people for life. Providing people with an interest free loan to start a business if often the best way to help them. They will often be able to repay the loan quite quickly. An effective business will provide financial support for the entire life time. Those who are successful will be able to help families. Interest free loans are often the best way to help the poor.

Land owners were required to leave some of their crop for the poor to glean.
The interesting thing about this approach is that the poor person has to work quite hard to get the help. Gleaning is harder work than harvesting, because the easiest part of the crop has been already been harvested. This hard work develops good work habits. It also contributes to the self respect of the gleaner.
Rural gleaning is not practical for people living in urban cultures, so developing modern gleaning methods is a challenge for Christian business owners. They should be looking for ways to give some of there surplus stock or spare capacity to poor people in ways that will help them get ahead. This will require creativity to be effective.
Business people should be looking for opportunities to apply the gleaning principle by helping poor people through their business. An ISP operator might provide free access to the internet for job searches. Another business might provide training on how to use machines or equipment during the evening. Businesses could give surplus machinery or computing equipment to poor people starting a business.
Bonded Service
The bonded employment option is only used for really serious poverty. Sometimes a person will have a financial problem that is too serious to be dealt with by an interest free loan. This is most like to occur where a person has to make restitution for a crime and has no credit record to justify the loan and no family member willing to act as guarantor to a lender.
The poor person will bond themselves to an employer for up to seven years in return for a lump-sum advance of their future wages.
The employer making the loan is running quite a risk, because they would not know how useful their employee will be. He may end up advancing more wages than he can recoup within seven years, especially if he is generous. There is also a risk that the bonded employee might abscond.
The employer is also required to treat the bonded employee well. If the employer does physical harm to a bonded employee, he or she must be set free from their debt.
When the bonded employee has repaid the amount of the bond, they are to be set free. The employer must be generous to the departing servant.
Conclusion
Poverty is one of the more persistent problems faced in the modern world. Governments have spent billions and billions of dollars on social welfare schemes with only limited schemes. They have donated billions of dollars as foreign own aid, but the problem of poverty in the third world has hardly been dented. The problem is that man’s way always fails. God has provided clear wisdom and guidance for dealing with poverty. We will only eliminate poverty from the world, when we do it God’s way.

If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, sells himself to you and serves you six years, in the seventh year you must let him go free (Deut 15:12).The length of the loan will depend on the amount advanced and the productive capacity of the person receiving the loan. Real Thanksgiving of AWE
I grew up in Rural North Dakota. I spent a lot of time on my back with a telescope. John Redlin and I would lay on a blanket in his back yard. I later would often find myself out on a hill near Ranch 2 at midnite looking up. Sometimes it would be clear as a bell in winter. The nearest yard light would be 2 miles away. The stars would be so bright, you could see the color differences between them.
It was more than just pedantic identification. To see the milky way streak across the sky and know that I was seeing billions of suns with planets around them gave me a sense of awe I carry to this day. How could I not believe in God seeing this. Paul the Apostle wrote of this in Romans 1:20 (NKJV) that,
"“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse. . ."
There were times when we lived north of Fargo that at 3AM the northern lights would be so bright you could almost see your shadow. It would seem as if you could actually hear them. They would humm. The telephone and power lines seemed to pick up the noise of them and reflect them.
I say this because I just looked at some pictures I want to show you from the Hubble telescope. I think the lack of faith in God exists because other lesser lights have dimmed our capacity to see the majesty that is the heavens. No wonder David wrote of what they saw at night with such eloquence:

Caring for the Poor Part 3 - The Church
Yesterday I was downtown Chicago. The street people were everywhere with their begging cups out. I even saw one fellow with a cup and a sad cardboard sign oblivious to everything because he was busy listening to hip hop on his I-Pod while he begged. I didn't put any money in his cup. In fact I only gave to one guy. I had (no hyperbole here) 50 chances. Being a Christian does NOT mean we are stupid about these things.
So. From Ron MacKinzies blog Blessed Economist, here is the 3rd installment. We do not understand Charity and Giving to the poor in the Church. I hope we can grow up as the Body of Christ and quit being stupid with our money. Unfortunately, many Charity organizations have at their core keeping the ministers and employees charitably employed. I don't give to them either. Look for very high efficiency giving vehicles. I recommend the Salvation Army to start. There are others. Not many.
Visible Witness
The people of the world are entitled to look at a Church to see if its members love each other. The problem is that love is not easy to see. Forgiveness and encouragement will often not be visible to those outside the Church.
The best way for Christians to make their love visible is by sharing their possessions. In a world where riches and poverty are normal, a Church with "“no needy people"” will be a very visible witness to the love of Jesus.
A sharing Church would be a tremendous testimony to people living close by. Christianity is not just a personal relationship with Jesus. His death on the cross also broke down the barrier of sin that divides us from other people. His people must demonstrate their restored relationships. In a world that is hungry for love, the best witness may not be a believer saying "Jesus loves me"”, but a group of Christians freely sharing their possessions.
Fasting Your Lifestyle
As Churches get serious about sharing their possessions, a simple lifestyle should start to emerge. People will still own property and possessions, but their attitudes should be very different. They will choose a simpler lifestyle, not because possessions are evil, but because they are irrelevant. Christians should be so focused on what God is doing that they lose interest in the things that occupy the world.
If the Holy Spirit is really moving in power, Christians will find it hard to be absorbed in a newer house or a bigger yacht? If the Lord is "“adding to their number daily"”, "“retail therapy"” will seem quite boring. If there is great joy in their neighborhood, because paralytics and cripples are being restored, who would be dreaming about upgrading their car? The members of a Church will be so involved in the work of the Holy Spirit, that they will lose the need to own more and more things.

IN the Church - Deacons
The ministry of the deacon is the important for the care of the poor. In the New Testament, deacons were the social "“welfare arm"” of the Church. The record of the appointment of the first deacons is in Acts 6. Men like Barnabas, when called to a Christian ministry, had sold their property and "brought the money and laid it at the apostles feet". The twelve used this money to provide for those in need.
This proposal pleased the whole group so they appointed seven men who were full of the Spirit. They presented these men to the apostles who laid hands on them. The result was that the word of God spread, and the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly.
The deacons were responsible for the offerings of the Church. They used them to provide for the needs of the poor and the sick. In doing this they were fulfilling the parable of the Good Samaritan. When he found a person in trouble, he took action to meet the immediate need. He then took further action to find a permanent solution, taking responsibility for the cost himself. This is a good pattern for the ministry of a deacon.
Qualifications of Deacons
The qualifications for the selection of deacons are listed in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. These are relevant to the nature of their work.
1. A deacon must be a person who does not pursue dishonest gain. Because they are responsible for the money of the Church, deacons must be trustworthy. They must have proved that they can handle money wisely and responsibly.
2. A deacon must be able to manage his household. If a man cannot manage his own household, then he will not be able to manage the finances of the Church. The elders should look at the way a person's household is functioning for evidence that he has the ability to do the work of a deacon. However, there is another reason why household management is important. The deacon also has a teaching role. He does not just give money to the people who are poor. He also teaches them how to manage their households better, so that they can manage on their own in the future without help. A deacon could not do this unless he was skilled in managing his own household. This would mean that monetary help would always be given on a short-term basis.
3. A deacon must also have a clear knowledge of the truths of the faith. This is because he also has an evangelistic ministry. The Christian gospel is always directed to the whole person. If a person is hungry, it is no use preaching the gospel to them, without feeding them. On the other hand, feeding a hungry person is no use without doing something about their spiritual needs. Deacons have a total ministry to the poor. As they distribute food and clothing, they will also preach the gospel. This is why they must have a good knowledge of the faith.
Some evangelists will start their ministry as deacons. Philip and Stephen both began their service as a deacon and then went on to a successful ministry as an evangelist.
4. People skills are more important than knowledge of finance and administration. The early Church chose deacons who were skilled in working with people.
5. Deacons should be full of the Spirit (Acts 6:2-4). They will need the discernment and wisdom that only the Holy Spirit can give. They would have personal contact with those that they are helping, so they could quickly weed out those who were bludging. The money would go to those with genuine needs.
Women in the Ministry of a Deacon
Women can fulfill the ministry of the deacon. Deaconesses are referred to twice in the New Testament. Phoebe a deaconess of the Church of Cenchrea is mentioned by Paul in Romans 16:1. The women referred to in 1 Timothy 3:11 are almost certainly deaconesses.
The ministry of the deacon can be performed well by a married couple. The husband would work with men and his wife would work with the women. The deacon'’s wife would concentrate on helping the wives to manage their homes wisely.
Widows can also exercise this ministry. They would have responsibility for caring for the other widows in the Church. Where a Church is under persecution this would be a very important ministry, as there will be many widows or women with husbands in prison or in heaven.
Women tend to function better than men in situations where personal care is needed. Female behavior is orientated towards helping and caring for personal needs. This means that women often do the work of a deacon better than men. They should be released into this ministry.
So. From Ron MacKinzies blog Blessed Economist, here is the 3rd installment. We do not understand Charity and Giving to the poor in the Church. I hope we can grow up as the Body of Christ and quit being stupid with our money. Unfortunately, many Charity organizations have at their core keeping the ministers and employees charitably employed. I don't give to them either. Look for very high efficiency giving vehicles. I recommend the Salvation Army to start. There are others. Not many.
Visible Witness
A new commandment I give you: Love one another as I have loved you, so must you love one another. All men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another (John 13:34,35).
I when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself (John 12:32).
The people of the world are entitled to look at a Church to see if its members love each other. The problem is that love is not easy to see. Forgiveness and encouragement will often not be visible to those outside the Church.
The best way for Christians to make their love visible is by sharing their possessions. In a world where riches and poverty are normal, a Church with "“no needy people"” will be a very visible witness to the love of Jesus.
A sharing Church would be a tremendous testimony to people living close by. Christianity is not just a personal relationship with Jesus. His death on the cross also broke down the barrier of sin that divides us from other people. His people must demonstrate their restored relationships. In a world that is hungry for love, the best witness may not be a believer saying "Jesus loves me"”, but a group of Christians freely sharing their possessions.
Fasting Your Lifestyle
As Churches get serious about sharing their possessions, a simple lifestyle should start to emerge. People will still own property and possessions, but their attitudes should be very different. They will choose a simpler lifestyle, not because possessions are evil, but because they are irrelevant. Christians should be so focused on what God is doing that they lose interest in the things that occupy the world.
If the Holy Spirit is really moving in power, Christians will find it hard to be absorbed in a newer house or a bigger yacht? If the Lord is "“adding to their number daily"”, "“retail therapy"” will seem quite boring. If there is great joy in their neighborhood, because paralytics and cripples are being restored, who would be dreaming about upgrading their car? The members of a Church will be so involved in the work of the Holy Spirit, that they will lose the need to own more and more things.

65 years ago God and FDR minus the ACLU
As a marker as to how far we have come or not on this Thanksgiving Day 2006 I am printing below excerpts from FDR that I read this morning in Christian Breaking News.
It occurs to me that if a President Bush or even Clinton said anything like this today the Hue and Cry risen up against them by the ACLU, Liberal Press, and Barry Lind would drown out the appeals to "Pass the Turkey". We are in deep doo doo in this country and maybe by looking back 65 years we can get our bearings again.

George W Bush's Noble War
I have many readers who have been quite vocal about their opposition to the USA's war on terror, to the whole effort in Iraq and the Middle East. Orson Scott Card has written a detailed defense of the war as waged by Bush and Co.
The problem is, it is comprehensive, long and requires some intellectual effort to get thru. I have stripped out the meat of it and posted it for your review.
If you are an opponent of the war and have enough intellectual honesty to consider how those of us who are Christians can sincerely support this effort, I challenge you to read the whole thing. Top to bottom. If at the end you still see the War on Terror as a wrong even unchristian venture, I want to hear your opinion. I am more convinced today of the rightness of this war than I was a year ago.

Caring for the Poor - The Christian Part 2
Ron McKinzie's blog "Blessed Economist" is carrying a steady series of dealing with the poor. I have found his views on this subject to be very paralell to mine. In other words if I wrote this it wouldn't be as good. So, in unabashed reprint, here is part TWO.
AS CHRISTIANS IN THE CHURCH
In situations where families are unable to provide the help that is needed, the church must get involved. Caring for the poor is part of the responsibility of every Christian.
These verses are really challenging for Christians. We know that Jesus laid down his life for us. We should also be prepared to lay down our lives for others by sharing our possessions. This is best done by the body of Christ sharing together. Deacons are members of the church who care for the poor on behalf of the church.
EQUALITY
Most people feel that large variations in income or wealth are wrong. This is confirmed in the Bible. God’s goal is equality.
This is the same goal as the socialists, but the method of achieving the goal is different. Socialists use compulsory taxation to transfer income and wealth from the rich to the poor. This makes the rich angry and leaves the poor still poor.
God also wants equality, but his way is by sharing. The theme of the entire chapter is not compulsory redistribution, but generosity and sharing.
Paul’s is a radical vision. He believed that if Christians grabbed hold of this sharing concept, the result would be equality. We are a long way from Paul’s vision, because we have not understood that sharing our wealth is the normal response to Jesus death on the cross. Generous sharing should be normal for Christians.
VOLUNTARY WITHOUT PRESSURE
Caring for the poor must always be voluntary. God does not force us to do good, so sharing must always be free choice.
Christian love produced a radically different attitude to possessions. Instead of being something to enjoy, they were seen as a gift from God to be used to strengthen the Church.
Christians like Barnabas responded to the gospel by selling their property and giving to those in need (Acts 4:36-37). There was not compulsion. All this giving was voluntary.
The story of Ananias and Saphira is well known, but we often miss the point of incident. It does show the dangers of lying to God, but more important, it shows that giving and sharing must always be voluntary. Peter’s words are important.
Peter’s key point is that Ananias’s land belonged to him before he sold it. The money belonged to him after he had sold it. He was under no compulsion to give anything. He could have kept the whole value of the property for himself without condemnation.
Christian sharing must always be a free response to the love of Jesus. The motivation must be compassion, not condemnation. Sharing must always be voluntary. It must motivated by love and not by peer pressure. Demanding that someone share is always unacceptable. Charity is a privilege, not a right.

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. Spectrum Analysis of the Continuum
I love to use big words even I don’t understand. But there is a serious point.
I was in a worship service last night and began asking this question. Where on the spectrum or continuum is this time we are having here? I began to understand that there is capacity to analyze the experience.
I know that among the hundred or so who read this you may think this is just about you. Marie, it is about what we talked about last night. I will take that picture. Last night’s meeting was supernatural. It's what motivated me to write this.
But, we must ask ourselves as ministers, are we doing what God expects or have we dumbed down the mission he gave us? Shouldn’t every time we get together be a supernatural encounter?
I believe. I believe we can. I believe we MUST!

We may not get all the way there, but knowing where we can go can move us forward with creative discontent at the way things are and to the way things could be. Whatever You Believe is Absolutely True (for you)
I have written on this before, but right now am motivated to take another run at it.
William James was the father of a secularist (although James was a Christian) thought movement that has persisted from his time in the around the turn of the 20th century until now. Usually it's called “Positive Thinking”.
One of his contemporaries was James Allen who was an early inspirational writer. His most famous book, “As a Man Thinketh” publshed in 1902 is still read quoted today. It comes from a proverb in the Bible. As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. Proverbs 23:7
I worked in the “Think and Grow Rich” industry for many years (Dale Carnegie Courses). I believe what was taught IF we understand that there are truths above and beyond those we conjure up.
What is true is:
If you think you can’'t you’'re right.
If you think it’s too hard you are dead on.
If you think you are never going to make it, that’s the truth.
If you think you can'’t make and keep friends, yep.
If you think you are hard to get along with, you are.
If you think you will never have enough money, it’s true.
If you think nothing ever works out for you, it won'’t.
If you think thinking anything other than what you are thinking is daydreaming, it is for you.
I have had to fight against thoughts which have the capacity to keep me down all my life. People have lied to me. Teachers, parental units, friends, customers, employees, even spiritual leaders. If I listened to them too long I too would be convinced that I should give up, nothing’s gonna work out.
That my friends are lies broadcast directly via broadband from the pit of hell.
This has to do with politics, this has to do with marriage, this has to do with business, this has to do with church, this has to do with work, this has to do with everything in my life and yours. Even much of the media today lies to us and works overtime to discourage us from believing.
Here’s the rub: You can think positive thoughts, hopeful thoughts, but if they are outside the word of God, prophetic and published they are useless. Oh, they will get results for a while. But the Devil will use them to trip you up.; Deceitfulness of riches.
Only by knowing what God says to and about you and hearing it and hearing it and hearing it will you ever get a breakthrough.
Even well meaning people will say things to you that are destructive. Peter said such to Jesus and Jesus had to rebuke Satan who was using Peter. Your friends and family didn’t mean to beat you down. They were used. And they abused with their words.
It’s time to take it all back, time to get it all right, time to adjust the words you live by.
Because, in the end, whatever you believe about yourself, your circumstances, your relationships, your work, your life is true for you. You can go on living under the circumstance OR you can begin living in hope and begin thinking like you believe what you hope to be true about your life. Everyone, including myself, who has gone that way, has found themselves better for it. Begin to believe, and you will become. Act as if it already was happening and it will.
What’s the alternative to choosing to live this way? Living like you do now?
Believe! Begin today. Whatever you think you are, you are.
Caring for the Poor by RonMck Part 1
This is a consolidation of posts by Ron McKinzie on the poor. I commend them to you, but I am going to repost them here with little comment from me. I believe that much of what happens in society, government and the church regarding the poor is unscriptural, wasteful and in some cases harmful.
Let's see if Ron agrees.
Poverty is a central issue for Christians. To be credible, we must provide proposals for the cure of poverty.
Many Christians advocate a reduction in taxes and welfare benefits. These things will eventually happen, but we should not even think about these policies, until we have alternative solutions in place and working. Compassion demands nothing less.
Tax the Rich?
The common preference is to help the poor by taxing the rich. The scriptures do not give responsibility for caring for the poor to rich people of society. Rich people are urged not to trust in their wealth. They are warned that their wealth may quickly disappear. They are warned that they may die before they have a chance to enjoy their wealth. However, the Bible is realistic and does not expect the rich to do good to the poor (if they are not Christians).
Furthermore, Jesus is not in the business of forcing rich people to be generous. The modern approach to poverty is to tax the rich and give their money to the poor. The implicit argument goes like this. Rich people are not as good as the rest of us, so they cannot be trusted to be generous of their own accord. They should be forced to be generous. We should tax the rich more, so the money can be used for the poor.
The problem with this approach is that Jesus never forced people be good. He would never force the rich to be generous. The Bible gives responsibility for the poor to Christians, not the rich. Christians who want to tax the rich to bless the poor are passing the buck.
Workfare?
This may seem obvious, but responsibility for providing our material needs is our own personal responsibility. Paul stated this quite bluntly when he said that those who will not work should not eat.
Personal provision includes saving enough to deal with the small emergencies that will arise from time to time (Prov 21:20). We do not know the future, but we can be certain that troubles will come; so a wise person will put a little aside to prepare for the unexpected.
Other methods of support only kick in when some unique circumstances prevent a person from providing for himself. For example, sickness or some other impairment may prevent a person from working. They will need support from others by one of the methods described in the Bible.
What About their Family?
The primarily responsibility for supporting those who become poor belongs within families.
The responsibility to provide care extends to children and grandchildren.
The traditional family managed inter-generational wealth transfers very effectively. Parents cared for children when they were young, and children provided for their parents when they grew old. This worked well, because parents have their greatest earning power, when their children need expensive tertiary education. The children have their best earning power, when their parents are old and dependent on them.
The modern social welfare state has created problems by shifting wealth between generations without thought for the consequences. These changes have broken the bonds that held our wider families together. Parents no longer provide for their teenage children, so they have less influence on their lives, just when the need is greatest. Often extended families do no know each other well, so they are not in a position to support each other. Christian community will have to be restored so that families can provide economic support for each other in times of need.
God has given fathers the responsibility for providing for their families and where the father or his family fails to provide, the church is responsible to meet the need. When the state becomes the provider, it takes this responsibility away from the father and he loses his self respect. This weakens family life, making the whole welfare problem worse.

If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especiallyFamilies should provide financial support for each other. The first port of call when someone gets in financial difficulty will be other family members. Family members are in the best position to provide help. They will know the person well, so they will understand their situation. Family members will quickly identify anyone who does not deserve help because they are just being lazy. The recipient may also have opportunities to provide assistance in the future, so help tends to be more reciprocal.

Curses Foiled Again
I heard this story on Paul Harvey. I was amused and bemused. I have been threatened with Voodoo more than once. In fact after a great deal of bragidocio on the part of some mountain residents I looked hard for a black magic practitioner to take on when I was in Jamaica a few years ago. It was all big talk till I told them I wanted a showdown, I even agreed to meet them in a cemetery at midnight. No takers. Oh well. Talk is cheap.
Here's the story:
A renowned black magic practitioner performed a voodoo ritual Thursday to jinx President George W. Bush and his entourage while he was on a brief visit to Indonesia.
Ki Gendeng Pamungkas slit the throat of a goat, a small snake and stabbed a black crow in the chest, stirred their blood with spice and broccoli before drank the "potion" and smeared some on his face.
"I don't hate Americans, but I don't like Bush," said Pamungkas, who believed the ritual would succeed as, "the devil is with me today."
He said the jinx would sent spirits to posses Secret Service personnel guarding Bush and left them in a trance, leading them into falsely thinking the President was under attack, thus eventually causing chaos in Bogor Presidential Palace, where the American leader was scheduled to meet President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday.
Indonesia the world's most populous Muslim country, however many still practicing animist rituals, including black magic, that predate Islam's arrival in the archipelago.
"I am doing voodoo, because other ritual would not work," he told reporters after he conducted the gory ritual about 1 kilometers from the palace.
Just in case anyone thinks there's anything to this, In the name of Jesus I rebuke and revoke any curse against President Bush or his secret service agents. Amen.

I am Human (more or less)

I am NOT an Evangelical (them's fight'en words) UPDATED SEE BELOW
I have NOT read Rick Warren’s book “Purpose Driven Life”. I don’t think it’s bad, I just think it represents a humanist attempt at redemption. Always a bad way to go.
That’s my argument against evangelicalism. They as a group somehow believe that you can mix intellectual analysis and reason with faith. Sorry, if I read my scriptures right, that aint’a gonna work.
Reason doesn’t have to be, but can be the enemy of faith. Trying too hard to reason things out will cause apostasy. The anti-christ will depend on peoples human reason to deceive them.
I was riding to a funeral with my Friend Harold Hein today. During the drive I was expounding on why the church of today is so inept. They don’t believe or accept the empowerment of the Holy Ghost. That is particularly true in the evangelical community.
I am on this bandwagon because I saw this article today in the news. Rick Warren is in the Middle East and says to our enemies that 80% of American people are against the war in Iraq. That simply isn’t true. He is doing what many well-meaning evangelicals do. They think by appearing “moderate” they can appeal to a wider realm. Sorry, you only appear weak and impotent. And stupid.
Here's what he said:
Blown away by every wind of doctrine as Rick Warren has just been blown by. I know he’s a big shot author, I know he pastors a 30,000 member church in California. I know he’s considered by most to be some kind of Guru. Color me really really really unimpressed. If you don’t know who you are as a man of God and you get pushed around by the zeitgeist of the middle east, you should be displaced by someone with actual spiritual gonads.
So, you can call me: Pentecostal, tongue talker, Holy Roller, charismatic, radical nutcase for Jesus and even Lutheran (Mo or Wi synod). You just doesn’t has to call me Evangelical. I ain’t one.
UPDATE: Rick Warren denies having said any such thing. OK. I will apologise and recant what I have said if in fact this rebuttel from Rick Warren turns out to be true. I was going on what appeared to be correct news reporting from Syria and not from bloggers.
But, in fairness, Rick Warren has responded here. I don't yet know who to believe. I think in the bad old cold war days we used to call them "Tools" of the enemy. I think Warren was blindsided.
I'm still not an evangelical. To the anonymus writer who I percieve was RonMak, I think your appelation of Evangelical in New Zealand is different from what it is in the USA. To be called an evangelical is not a badge of spiritual courage in the USA. And, I said I had NOT read Warren's book. I do own it. I have tried to read it a couple times and stopped because I found it wanting so. My wife read it and yawned. I don't get it, we must be a very needy people for this to have had such an impact.
