An Excellent Explanation from what appears to be Controversial Source

I found very edifying a video I saw in Sunday Morning Church Sunday.

I thought it was so good at explaining the concept of greater works and why Peter walked on water.

Then in looking for it to post on this blog I ran into all kinds of people who find this man's teaching to be in error. He apparently is from the emerging church movement. I don't know much about all that. I just found his exposition pretty good. It's Rob Bell teaching on the Rabbi's dust.

So, watch the videos and ignore the offended. Jesus was really right when he said that the spirit of offense would rise at the end of the age.

MY FRIEND HARRY HAD A CONTRARY OPION ON THIS;
That video shown at church on May 4 has evoked a lot of questions. The
theme of the youth service was "helping your neighbor", so it seems. The video
was saying, "you can be like Jesus, you can do what Jesus did, just like the
Jews in the first century following a rabbi , chosen by the rabbi because the
rabbi knew the little guy had the 'right stuff', the 'best of the best', you can
learn to do what the rabbi does". And then the winter scene of a woman (I
think ti was a woman) shoveling out the snow from the driveway of her neighbor
was obviously following the theme of the service of 'helping your neighbor'.
Am I missing something? SO..... what was the message? I can be like Jesus?
(die for the sins of the world?) (walk on water?) . I agree, that the Lord
Himself is also our Example, but not to foolishly jump off a building and defy
the law of gravity (I think that was a temptation the devil brought one
time).....The scene of the woman helping the neighbor
was fine, but the comments of the guy sitting in a warm toasty home didn't
exactly fit the scene. In fact, what I saw was a guy like a 'Jewish rabbi"
pontificating while sitting on his warm posterior telling us that we can be like
Jesus, while a poor woman is freeZing her behind while shoveling out his
driveway!.....typical, probably, of many of the males of the first century,
letting all the women do the work...just like I saw of many men in Africa,
sitting around and chewing the fat, drinking palm wine with their pontificating
buddies while the women have their babies strapped on their back and are out in
the cassava patch, bending over and hoeing out the weeds, or carrying a 50 lb.
wooden branch on her head, bringing it home so she can make a fire with it
while she pounds cassava and beats some yam to cook a meal for her husband.
..and he's wondering why it's taking so long for his supper.

There was little Gospel in the message. While not all texts in
the Bible have clear Gospel, yet we have to supply the whole context of the
bible in preaching and teaching, and that certainly means that we should include
the gospel as the motivation for our life of sanctification. So much of
Christian 'teaching' and ''learning' today is nothing more than Law, with no
Gospel motivation. ..... be like Jesus, be kind, forgiving, helpful, peaceful,
tolerant....
Yes, we are to be like Him, but how often I fail...maybe I am failing
right now because I am picky, picky, about the video and its message God
forgive me, Thanks God, there is forgiveness for my critque-ing spirit.
IN CHRIST,
What do you think? Harold H., a
crotchety old man
